Speedometer Face Replacement
for 1999-2003 Road Stars only

This installation procedure is not a hard project at all, it does require you to be fairly steady, and a novice can do this easily. Proper tools make the difference, go slow, taking your time can make all the difference in the world.

Tools:

5mm Allen head wrench

Super Glue

Medium & Small Phillips Screwdrivers
(Small screwdriver is for the 2 silver speedometer face screws)

Pry tool (See inset below)

Chip Puller from cheap computer tool kit
(optional)

(Pliers or other tools used can damage your needles and/or other speedo parts, it is not recommended at all)

2" x 2" piece of cardboard for leverage (Fold it into quarters)

The best tool I have used to date is the tool above. It's found in most tool departments such as Home Depot ot Lowe's. It allows you to 'pry up', rather than 'pull up', stopping the breaking of needles. The above image shows the SIDE VIEW to demonstrate how to place the cardboard leverage and the pry tool.
(Some needles come off just by pulling at them with your fingers, not all are this easy though)
The cardboard can be obtained by utilizing the cardboard from your printer paper, or from a new shirt package.

Step 1.  Remove instrument cluster from tank,
3 – 5MM Allen head bolts shown by arrows.

CAUTION!
Place a towel over your gas tank to ensure you don't scratch the paint. Invert the instrument cluster and begin work.

Step 2. Remove speedometer housing from cluster, 3 Philips screws as shown by arrows.

Step 3. Split speedometer case, 4 Philips screws shown by arrows.

Step 4. Pry needles up taking care to push them straight up, without turning them. See image above for the best tool, or just being very careful with fingers. BE CAREFUL!

Remove (2) Philips Screws as shown by arrows.

Step 5. Super Glue the needle stops provided onto the new dial from behind the dial

Step 6. Replace with NEW Webslinger and put needles back on, be sure the needles go back in same position making sure you don’t turn them as they go in. Be sure you have them all the way in, also. Make sure that you line up the points instead of the numbers to the original (OEM) face. The numbers may not be in the same place at all, but, the points should be exactly in the same position.

Step 7. Reconnect speedometer before you put the case back together to make sure needles go back to proper positions after the speedometer does its reset. If not, pull and reposition.
Watch the needles calibrate correctly, if you don't see the needles go back to "0" on the speedo, and the "E" on the gas gauge, pull the needles off again and try to position them BEHIND the "0"pin, then bend it up GENTLY and move to the "0" mark.
I am not responsible for this method if you break your needle, I just know it's the best way for me, and I did mine that way without any ill effects. I do know of a few cases where people have broken their needles, so be very careful at this point.

Step 8. Put the 4 screws back in to put speedometer assembly together after you are positive that the needles are calibrated.

Step 9. Put the 3 screws back in to hold speedometer assembly to cluster.
Push the bottom part of the rubber grommet in first, then pull the top part into the hole, you may have to 'wad it up' to do this.

Step 10. Reconnect the instrument panel and put the 3 Allen bolts back to hold instrument cluster on.
If your needles 'jump' at all, you will need to redo steps 6 through 9, calibration is a 'touchy' thing sometimes, be sure to do it correctly the first time and you should have no problems. It should be a 'smooth sweep'.
